Huang Puha 3rd Album [Two Faces]

Following the stories of 'Life and Death (volume 1, [Dawn Without Color])' and 'Growth (volume 2, [Self-portrait])', ontological questions about 'art'!

“The struggle between the two faces of an artist who says he can express the real and a reason who says he can’t express it is portrayed with the improvisational band Teho.”

1. Talk about art
While making and singing songs, I had never thought deeply about what the hell art was. Then, by chance, I came across Arnold Schonberg (September 13, 1874 – July 13, 1951)'s opera <Moses and Aaron>, and I thought I wanted to talk about art. The opera <Moses and Aaron> was an aesthetic interpretation of the Old Testament Exodus. In fact, Exodus was not simply a story of slaves escaping Egypt. This is because the escape is already over in 15 out of 40 chapters. Aesthetically, Exodus was a story of a struggle between those who said they couldn't express reality and those who said they could. The one who forbids the creation of God's image, the one who says that only the law is absolute and perfect, the one who says that only the life that keeps it is the perfect life, and the one who continues to create something, the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire, the sanctuary and the golden calf The battle between Aaron, the thinker and the artist.
In Korean society these days, it seems that the art of music is often dismissed as a secondary thing that helps entertainment or comfort. However, if we consider the influence that songs have had on our history and the spirit of the times, songs are the main agent that advances us. Without music, this society cannot progress. So let's make a new song. Let's listen to newer songs, let's sing newer songs. So let's renew this world even more.

2. Improvisation band TEHO
I thought that the above story had limits in expression with the folk music that Huang Puha used to do. When I thought I needed something more avant-garde and beyond that limit, I met the improvisational band Teho. Lee Tae-hoon on guitar, Min Sang-yong on drums, Kim Seong-wan on saxophone, and Jin Soo-young on piano, it was a band composed of the best performers who could all be called my own. When I first listened to Teho's 1st album as a sound source, it was by no means easy music to listen to. It was complicated and, above all, difficult. I thought it would be difficult to include in the genre of free jazz. But the moment I saw it live, it was a genre I had never seen before, and it broadened my musical horizons. I was determined to discuss the above story with them, no matter how confident I was.

'삶과 죽음(1집, [칼라가 없는 새벽])', '성장(2집, [자화상])'에 대한 이야기에 이은 '예술'에 대한 존재론적 질문들!

“실재를 표현할 수 있다고 말하는 예술가와 표현해서는 안 된다고 말하는 사유가, 이 두 얼굴 간의 투쟁을 즉흥 연주 밴드 테호(Teho)와 함께 그렸다.”

1. 예술에 대한 이야기
노래를 만들고 부르면서도 예술이 도대체 무엇인지에 대해서 깊이 생각해본 적은 없었다. 그러다 우연히 작곡가 아놀드 쇤베르크(Arnold Schonberg, 1874. 9. 13 ? 1951. 7. 13)의 오페라 <모세와 아론>을 접했고, 예술에 대한 이야기를 해보고 싶다는 생각이 들었다. 오페라 <모세와 아론>은 구약성서 출애굽기에 대한 미학적 해석이었다. 사실 출애굽기는 단순히 노예들이 이집트를 탈출하는 이야기는 아니었다. 총 40장 중 15장에서 이미 탈출이 끝나기 때문이다. 미학적으로 봤을 때 출애굽기는 실재를 표현할 수 없다고 말하는 사람과 실재를 표현할 수 있다고 말하는 사람간의 투쟁을 그린 이야기였다. 신의 형상을 만들지 못하게 하는 사람, 율법만이 절대적이고 완벽하다고 말하는 사람, 그래서 그것을 지키는 삶만이 완전한 삶이라고 말하는 모세와 계속해서 무언가를 만들어내는 사람, 구름기둥과 불기둥, 성소를 만들고 금송아지도 만들어내는 아론, 즉 사유가와 예술가 간의 싸움 말이다.
요즘 한국사회에서 음악 예술은 여흥이나 위로를 돕는 부차적인 것으로 치부되는 경우가 많은 것 같다. 하지만 그동안 우리의 역사와 시대정신에 노래가 끼친 영향을 생각해보면, 노래는 우리를 진보시키는 주체다. 노래가 없으면 이 사회는 진보할 수 없다. 그러므로 우리는 더 새로운 노래를 만들자. 더 새로운 노래를 듣고, 더 새로운 노래를 부르자. 그래서 이 세계를 더욱 새롭게 하자.

2. 즉흥 연주 밴드 테호(TEHO)
위 이야기는 기존에 황푸하가 하던 포크 음악으로는 표현에 한계가 있다고 생각했다. 훨씬 전위적이고 그 한계를 뛰어넘는 다른 무언가가 필요하다고 생각할 때, 즉흥 연주 밴드 테호를 만나게 되었다. 기타에 이태훈, 드럼에 민상용, 색소폰에 김성완, 피아노에 진수영, 모두 내로라할 수 있는 최고의 연주자들로 구성된 밴드였다. 처음에 테호 1집을 음원으로 들었을 때는 결코 듣기 쉬운 음악은 아니었다. 복잡하기도 했고 무엇보다 어려웠다. 프리 재즈라는 장르로는 담기 힘들다고 생각했다. 하지만 라이브를 본 순간, 그것은 처음 보는 장르였고, 나의 음악 지평을 넓혀주었다. 무슨 자신감이었는지 이들과 함께 위 이야기를 다뤄 보기로 마음을 먹었다.
